When the time of dissolution had passed, at the end of the fourth thousand ages, when the unmanifest and the dissolution of all beings had come, with moving and unmoving gone, devoid of light, earth and wind, in sinless darkness, in a world of one ocean of water, called only "darkness," in a second-less state, neither in night nor in day, neither being nor non-being, neither manifest nor unmanifest established: in this state, from Narayana, the refuge of qualities, imperishable, ageless, senseless, ungraspable, unborn, true, harmless, auspicious, of varied activities, imperishable, unageing and deathless, formless, all-pervading, maker of all, eternal darkness, the Person, Hari the unchanging, appeared.

English

At the appearance of Brahma, lotus-born, of that Person born of darkness, that Person, wishing to create creatures, created Agni and Soma from his eyes. Then, when the creation of beings proceeded, in the sequence of creatures came brahmanas and kshatriyas. What is Soma is Brahman; what is Brahman are brahmanas; what is Agni is kshatra; and from kshatra Brahman is stronger. Why? This is a quality evident to the world: no being higher than brahmanas was born before. He offers in the kindled fire; therefore I say: the creation of beings was made by Brahma, and the three worlds are held by establishing beings.

English

For without mantra there is no oblation, nor without the Person austerity; the offering and worship of the mantras are for gods and men; by this, "You are the hotri," he is appointed. And the offices of hotri that men hold belong to the brahmana; sacrificing for others is laid down not for kshatriyas and vaishyas, the twice-born. Therefore brahmanas, having become Agni, carry the sacrifices; sacrifices satisfy the gods; the gods nourish the earth.

That Reciter who becomes identified with his Soul (by withdrawing everything into it) goes thither. He has, after this, never to feel any sorrow. This region is called Supreme. The other regions (of which I have first spoken) are hell. I have not told thee of all those regions that are called hell. For brahmanas first appeared together with the speech of that boon-giving god, and from brahmanas the other classes appeared. And thus brahmanas are distinguished among gods and asuras, when long ago I myself, having become Brahman, produced them; gods, asuras and great sages, distinct beings, were established and restrained.

Daksha had sixty daughters; of them he gave thirteen to Kashyapa, ten to Dharma, ten to Manu, and twenty-seven to Indu. Though they were equal and had the name of the lunar mansions, Soma showed extra love to Rohini. Then the others, the wives, jealous, went to their father and told this matter: "Blessed one, though we are equal in power, Soma serves Rohini more." He said, "Consumption will enter him."

English

By Daksha's curse, consumption entered Soma the king. Seized by consumption, he went to Daksha, and Daksha said, "You do not behave equally." The sages said to Soma, "You are wasting by consumption; in the western direction in the ocean is the sacred bathing-place Hiranyasaras; go there and bathe." Soma went to the tirtha Hiranyasaras and bathed himself, and freed himself of sin. Because Soma shone there, from then the tirtha became famous by the name Prabhasa. By that curse even now Soma wanes, standing at the new moon, and at the full moon shows his body covered by a line of cloud, taking a colour like a cloud; so his hare-mark became spotless.

अषश्ट भ्य: प्रकृतिभ्यश्व जात॑ विश्वमिदं जगत्

English

The great sage Sthulashiras practised austerity in the north-east direction of Meru. As he practised austerity, a pure wind bearing every scent blew and touched his body. His body heated by austerity, lean, fanned by the wind, he reached heart's content. For him, so pleased by the fanning of the wind, the trees at once did not show the beauty of flowers; so he cursed them, "You will not be in flower at all times."

English

For the good of the world Narayana was long ago the great sage named Vadavamukha. When he practised austerity on Meru, the ocean called did not come; angered, by the heat of his own body he made the ocean's water still and gave it a saltness like sweat. And he said, "You will be undrinkable; and this water, drunk sweet by one named Vadavamukha, will become so"; even today the sea water is drunk by that one named Vadavamukha who follows.
