देवैरत्रापि विचिकित्सितं पुरा न हि सुविज्ञेयमणुरेष धर्मः ।अन्यं वरं नचिकेतो वृणीष्व मा मोपरोत्सीरति मा सृजैनम्
devairatrāpi vicikitsitaṃ purā na hi suvijñeyamaṇureṣa dharmaḥ | anyaṃ varaṃ naciketo vṛṇīṣva mā moparotsīrati mā sṛjainam
Yama tries to deflect. Even the gods are unsure; the subject is too subtle; choose another boon. The teacher tests the student's resolve.
अर्थMeaning
"इस विषय में पुरातन देवों को भी संशय था; यह सुगमता से ज्ञेय नहीं है — यह धर्म अत्यन्त सूक्ष्म है। हे नचिकेता! दूसरा कोई वर माँग। मुझे मत बाँधो; इसे छोड़ दो।"
अक्षरशः अनुवाद — मूल संस्कृत श्लोक के प्रत्येक पद का प्रत्यक्ष अर्थ।
(Yama:) 'On this point even the gods of old had doubts. This is not easily known — the dharma is subtle. Ask another boon, Naciketas. Do not press me. Release me from this one.'
