तामस तप के दो रूप बताए गए हैं। पहला वह है जो 'मूढग्राहेण', अर्थात् मूढ़तापूर्ण हठ या भ्रमपूर्ण धारणा के कारण 'आत्मनः पीडया', अपने आप को पीड़ा देकर किया जाता है। दूसरा वह है जो 'परस्य उत्सादनार्थम्', अर्थात् किसी दूसरे को हानि पहुँचाने या नष्ट करने के उद्देश्य से किया जाता है। पहले रूप में व्यक्ति यह भ्रम पाल लेता है कि जितना अधिक कष्ट, उतनी अधिक आध्यात्मिकता; यह वही प्रवृत्ति है जिसकी निंदा पाँचवें-छठे श्लोक में की गई थी। दूसरा रूप और भी गंभीर है, जहाँ साधना का बल किसी के अहित में लगाया जाता है। दोनों में साझा बात है विवेक का अभाव, जो तमस का मुख्य लक्षण है। सात्त्विक, राजस और तामस तप की तुलना से एक स्पष्ट क्रम उभरता है: सात्त्विक तप भीतर शांति लाता है, राजस तप बाहर प्रशंसा खोजता है, और तामस तप स्वयं को या दूसरों को कष्ट देता है।
