asuryā nāma te lokā andhena tamasā''vṛtāḥ | tāṃste pretyābhigacchanti ye ke cātmahano janāḥ
A stern warning. To "kill the Self" (ātma-han) is to live as though you were only the body — to ignore the spiritual dimension. Such a life leads, the Upanishad says, to a state of darkness here and hereafter. Materialism is described as a kind of suicide.
Meaning
There are worlds called "asurya" (demonic, sunless), enveloped in blinding darkness. Those who slay the Self go there after death.
Direct literal rendering preserving Sanskrit philosophical terminology.
Vyakhya
Science & Modern Application
शोध संदर्भResearch context · not scriptureComparative Research Noteशोध टिप्पणी
A modern parallel offered for reflection. It is not part of the scripture, and it has not been checked against the original sources it may allude to.
