ॐ शीक्षां व्याख्यास्यामः ।वर्णः स्वरः ।मात्रा बलम् ।साम सन्तानः ।इत्युक्तः शीक्षाध्यायः ॥ १ ॥ ॥ इति अनुवाकः
oṃ śīkṣāṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ | varṇaḥ svaraḥ | mātrā balam | sāma santānaḥ | ityuktaḥ śīkṣādhyāyaḥ || 1 || || iti anuvākaḥ
The Upanishad takes phonetics seriously. Six elements of precise speech — letter, accent, length, force, modulation, continuity. Right speech is the foundation of all teaching.
अर्थMeaning
ॐ। हम शिक्षा (उच्चारण-विज्ञान) की व्याख्या करते हैं — वर्ण, स्वर, मात्रा, बल, साम (मधुरता), सन्तान (सम्बन्ध) — इस प्रकार शिक्षा-अध्याय कहा गया।
अक्षरशः अनुवाद — मूल संस्कृत श्लोक के प्रत्येक पद का प्रत्यक्ष अर्थ।
OM. We shall expound śīkṣā (phonetics). The letter, the accent, the quantity, the effort, the modulation, the connection — thus has been stated the chapter on śīkṣā.

उपनिषद् उच्चारण-विज्ञान को गम्भीरता से लेता है। शुद्ध वाणी के छः तत्त्व — वर्ण, स्वर, मात्रा, बल, साम (लय) और सन्तान (सन्धि)। सम्पूर्ण शिक्षण का आधार है सही वाणी।

आधुनिक उच्चारण-विज्ञान (Articulatory Phonetics) आज भी लगभग यही प्राचालक मानता है — उच्चारण-स्थान, उच्चारण-विधि, सांसारिक स्वर, दीर्घता, बलाघात और अनुतान (prosody)। उपनिषद् के छः बिन्दु इनसे अत्यन्त मेल खाते हैं।
